SAWMILL SHOWDOWN EXPERIENCE

Updated: Sep 17

The Sawmill Showdown and the Tactical Games share similar foundations, focusing on a mix of physical fitness and tactical shooting, but they differ in a few key areas:

Scope and Focus:

  • Sawmill Showdown: This event balances fitness and shooting challenges. It typically features timed fitness components like rowing, running, and sandbag carries, followed by shooting stages. It's more of a hybrid fitness competition with a tactical twist.

  • The Tactical Games: These events are more explicitly designed to simulate combat scenarios. Competitors must handle firearms and overcome physical tasks such as carrying heavy loads under stress, often replicating real-world military or law enforcement conditions.

Intensity of Physical Challenges:

  • Sawmill Showdown: The workouts are demanding but often resemble traditional CrossFit workouts combined with shooting elements. It’s accessible to a broader audience of tactical athletes.

  • Tactical Games: The Tactical Games push the intensity further, focusing on tactical skills alongside heavier, more grueling physical requirements. Competitors face tasks like dragging weighted sleds or moving with full tactical gear over long distances.

Event Structure:

  • Sawmill Showdown: Focuses on a smaller, more focused set of challenges with fewer divisions and a combination of fitness and firearms events.

  • Tactical Games: This event offers more extensive divisions based on skill level, age, and gender, with stages designed to push athletes to their physical and tactical limits.

Grey Group Tactical Notes:

The Sawmill Showdown is primarily a fitness-focused event that integrates tactical shooting, while the Tactical Games emphasize replicating real-world tactical scenarios with extreme physical and shooting challenges. Hosted at the Sawmill Training Complex in Laurens, South Carolina, the Sawmill Showdown presents a unique hybrid competition. Testing participants across various physical tasks such as biking, weighted carries, and shooting drills.

The Sawmill Training Complex offers more than just a facility; it provides a truly immersive experience. Having visited multiple complexes owned and operated by highly skilled veterans, we felt an immediate sense of belonging. The lodge was impeccable, exuding comfort and cleanliness in a way that made us feel right at home. The ranges were meticulously maintained, reflecting the professionalism of the staff. Range Safety Officers (RSOs) were exceptionally vigilant and precise in their oversight, ensuring a safe and efficient environment. The equally impressive volunteers demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the mission and embodied the spirit of camaraderie. Their genuine dedication and approachable nature added a personal touch, enhancing the overall experience. The Sawmill Training Complex is a testament to operational excellence, hospitality, and community.
